Tips to Make Your Office More Environmentally Friendly

By wizu | 23 November 2020

Are you looking for ways to make the office more sustainable and friendly to the environment? Then you’ve come to the right place. It can be challenging to find ways to make an office more sustainable but it’s well worth the effort.

Benefits of Going Green at the Office

There are several benefits of going green and making your office environmentally friendly. Not only does doing so reduce costs, but it can also:

Increase productivity: research has shown that employees are happier working in a green office. This leads to an increase in overall productivity and lower rates of employee turnover. The reason is partly the pride that employees take in working for a business that cares about the environment, and one that actually goes the extra mile to help our world be a better place.

Healthier employees: working in a greener work environment also makes everyone healthier. When the office is attractive and sustainable, employees are not exposed to high levels of chemicals that can lead to harmful health issues in some individuals. Not only that, but the atmosphere in a greener workplace is more pleasant, leading to increased happiness and healthier employees.

Reduction in utility costs: going green can also help to lower your company’s utility bills. You’ll save money and can opt to use renewable energy from green sources such as wind and solar.

Improved business image: your business will also enjoy the benefits of a green reputation. Many clients, customers and even partners are drawn to companies and organisations that truly work to help improve the environment. You’ll possibly even draw new business as a result of going green.

Helping the environment: one of the best benefits is that our world will enjoy a better environment with your company’s green efforts. If each company and organisation in the world had the goal of becoming environmentally friendly, it would make a huge, positive impact on our world. d

Going green doesn’t have to be difficult. Your efforts can start out small, and then grow as you’re able to take larger steps to becoming an environmentally friendly company.

To help you get started, we’ve put together some ways you can reduce your office footprint, while helping the environment.

Tips on Going Green at the Office

As noted above, you don’t have to start out with giant steps to becoming a greener company. Here are some tips on how you can start to make the change to a greener business!

1). Recycle When & Where Possible

This is one of the easiest places to start on becoming an environmentally friendly business. In fact, many of the materials used at work can be recycle, rather than put in the trash and ending up in the landfill. Consider recycling as much as possible:

  • Use shredders to dispose of old documents that are not longer needed. Shredded paper can be recycled and used again after it’s been processed.
  • Electronics can also be recycled
  • Recycle cardboard boxes
  • Keep a compost container for kitchen scraps

2). Use Only Environmentally Safe Products

Products that are safe and friendly to the environment are in most cases easy to purchase these days. The reason is that more businesses and individuals have began  to understand that many chemicals in our places of business and our homes harm the environment, including the wildlife in our world.

  • Use cleaners that are safe for the environment; many commercial cleaning products are now available on the market
  • Use paper and other sanitary supplies that are made from recycled paper
  • And more

3). Only Use Energy Efficient Appliances and Devices

Offices consume large amounts of energy, which has a direct impact on the environment. To change this, try:

  • Using only energy efficient devices and appliances
  • Change the office lighting over to energy efficient LED lighting
  • Use an energy efficient climate control system

4). Cut Down on Energy Use

You can cut down on energy usage by switching over to energy efficient devices and appliances. However, you can further reduce energy use by:

  • Turning off devices and lights at the end of the day
  • Power down other unnecessary devices when no one will be using them
  • Consider the installation of motion-activated lights and power saving modes (for computers, printers, and more)

5). Educate Employers on How Much Energy They Use

Another great way to make your business greener is to teach employees how to cut down their own use of non-renewable energy sources. This can be as easy as encouraging employees to share rides to work, use public transportation, or even bike to the office. While these may seem like small changes, they can make a real difference when more choose to cut down their own use of non-renewable energy sources.

6). Use Only Real Kitchenware

What does this mean? Isn’t all kitchenware “real?” Well, yes, but some kitchen items are greener than others. For example, have you noticed all the plastic in your company kitchen? This usually ranges from straws, knives, forks, spoons, cups, and more.

To go for the green, encourage employees to use only reusable versions of these kitchen necessities. That means real coffee mugs, glasses, dishes, and silverware.

Another thing you can change it so use only coffee filters made of recycled paper. Or even opt for a coffee maker that doesn’t use filters.

These methods will help reduce the amount of trash the company makes, while at the same time creating a greener footprint.

7). Bring in Plants

Nothing creates a better working environment than adding plants to the office workspace. Not only does this add a touch of the outdoors to the office, many houseplants also work to clean the air. Choose plants that are easy to care for and clean the office air as they look beautiful. You’ll not only have better air quality in the office, but employees will be happier with plants in their workspaces, too.

As you can see, there are steps most businesses can easily take to become friendlier for the environment. By starting out with small, manageable steps, your company will become energy efficient, while also cultivating a reputation for helping the environment.
