Leeds Kirkgate market is and always has been a cultural hub of the city centre. This thriving community and shopping paradise offers all sorts, from fun fashion & jewellery, to fresh food & flowers. Working in the Leeming building above the market definitely has its perks – we’re able to grab fresh fruit for our clients every morning within a 30 second walk. It has so much to offer so we thought we would share with you our favourite hidden gems within Leeds Kirkgate Market.

Teapot

First up is Teapot – Tea or Coffee, an independent tea room & café offering an abundance of loose tea leaves that awaken the senses! Our first experience was immense, as we were blown away by the multitude of various flavours. Greeted by a very friendly gentlemen and tantalising smells, we were excited to try out what they had to offer. Upon purchasing the Lady Earl Grey, it came in lovely packaging with a detailed label that informs you of the ingredients in that specific tea. It also offers a suggestion of consumption, “wonderful in hot days or as a lunchtime tea.” It gives instructions on what the ideal temperature of the water should be, how much tea to use and also a suggested brewing time. All these little things go into creating a beautiful cup of tea! And we all love tea, especially being from Yorkshire.

Instanbul Bakery

Next up is Istanbul Bakery, which does what it says on the tin. They sell fresh bread and their pieces of baklava are just to die for, but it’s what they do with the traditional Istanbul bread that got us. A chicken shawarma for only £3.00 is filled to the brim with deliciousness. The filling includes fresh lettuce, tomatoes and shredded flavourful chicken, simple yet effective. For the ‘not-so’spicy’ lovers we’d recommend topping your shawarma with delicious garlic mayo, or if you prefer a bit of a kick, you can top it with fresh jalapeños and chilli salsa. We were full to the brim after our delicious shawarma but for those with an extra large appetite they offer either rice or chips for just £1.00 extra. If you fancy something sweet after, their baklava pieces at £1.00 do the trick – sticky and nutty scrumptiousness!7

Oliver’s Quality Fruits

Next up we have Oliver’s Quality Fruits, which sell fresh seasonal fruit as well as vegetables. We’re lucky enough to be based above the market, so we love to pop down every morning just as the guys are putting out the fruit. We buy our lovely clients fresh fruit to snack on throughout the day to keep them going. Recently we’ve been stocking up on peaches, nectarines and cherries which are seasonal and delicious. So fresh and sweet, yum! You can’t get better quality fruit, and the price is unbeatable! 2 bunches of bananas for £1.00, a bag of cherries for £1,00, a bowl of peaches a £1.00, you really can’t beat those prices or the quality. You’re always served with a friendly smile which never goes amiss, especially on a Monday morning!

The Look

Now here’s one for the girls. The Look make up stall is brilliant. Let us just start off by saying that these lovely ladies sell Rimmel, Max Factor and Sally Hansen, that’s what caught our eye about the stall, not only were the products cheap but they’re professional brands too. Sometimes Boots 3 for 2 just doesn’t cut it, and we still end up spending over £30! So if you’re looking for a foundation or face powder, we suggest visiting this stall ladies. They also offer fabulous pallets of glitter eye shadow for that festival summer look or a glam night out in Leeds. To finish off your look, there is an array of nail polishes too. You could literally spend hours at this stall, looking at all their fabulous products and maybe even treat yourself to a Marc Jacobs perfume too?

Sweetman

For just 70p per 100g, you can do a pick and mix of your favourite classics, from giant foamy bananas which are our personal favourite, to meter long, flump style marshmallows!  You can also make your Willy Wonka dreams come true, and purchase a lolly big enough to last you a whole week!
