Staying Motivated in the Run-Up to Christmas: Tips for Productivity

By Wizu | 06 November 2023

As the festive season approaches and the days grow shorter, staying productive at work can be a challenge. The allure of holiday festivities, coupled with the winter chill, can make it difficult to maintain focus and productivity.

We’re here to help with that! Let’s have a look at some recommended tips and strategies to help you stay motivated and maintain your productivity in the run-up to Christmas (we won’t be disappointed if you send a *few* of the classic ‘let’s come back to this after Christmas’ emails).

Goal setting isn’t a cliche:

The first step to staying motivated is to set clear, achievable goals. Whether it’s completing a project, reaching a certain sales target, or finishing tasks before the holiday break, having defined objectives will keep you on track.

Prioritise, Prioritise, Prioritise:

With a to-do list that seems to grow by the day, it can seemingly get harder to get anything checked off. This is why prioritising your tasks can be the thing that defines whether your day is productive or not. First thing in the morning, get to identifying your most important and time-sensitive projects, and stack them in a block, in a period of time that you’re most productive in the day. A technique sometimes used is the The Eisenhower Matrix – create a four box square in  which you can split your tasks to prioritise what you should focus on first. The four squares will correspond with the 4 D’s of execution: do, defer, delegate, and delete.

Watch the clock:

Time management can really change the way you work coupled with task prioritisation! There’s lots of time management techniques out there, like the Pomodoro Technique that can help you stay focused. Some of our favourite are: Forest App, Notion.so, Clickup, Lifeat.Io.

Get decorating:

Don’t be a grinch, grab that dusty mini tree from the cupboard and get to embracing the festive spirit by giving your workspace a sprinkle of Christmas dust! Adding some festive decor can help lift your mood and help maintain a positive atmosphere if you celebrate Christmas.

Shut that laptop and take a break:

Like the Kitkat ad says ‘have a break, have a kitkat’. Make sure to prioritise at least one break during the day, during which you can have a sweet treat of your choice (Kitkat isn’t the only thing on the shelf!). Breaks help to boost your focus and prevent burnout.

Get moving:

The age old suggestion – move from your chair and give your body a good ol shake. Exercise is a great way to boost your motivation, as the endorphins released post exercise can help maintain energy levels and productivity. If you’re the kind of person who likes a lunchtime work out, why not pop for an exercise class? Or integrate a walk or stretch routine into your lunchtime schedule.

Stay in touch and celebrate the small things:

Take advantage of the positive vibes floating round during the festive. Plan team events and festive activities, and don’t forget to celebrate both the small and big achievements to acknowledge your accomplishments and a productive end of the year.

Don’t eat too many mince pies:

As every doctor, advert and website has told you, a balanced diet is really important in maintaining energy levels and focus – and they’re not wrong. Your diet has a HUGE impact on your day to day and how you get through the day. A coffee in the morning? Not a bad thing. A quick chocolate bar on your lunch? A rewarding treat for finishing your morning to-do list. Just don’t overdo it! As they say, everything in moderation.

De-clutter your mind and space:

A cluttered workspace can be really distracting. Keeping your workspace organised and uncluttered can reduce stress and improve focus.

Disconnect Mindfully:

Disconnect from work at the end of the day is a great way to refresh for the day ahead tomorrow. It’s important to set boundaries to ensure that you can fully enjoy your evenings, weeks and holiday festivities.

We’ve all fallen victim to the pre-Christmas slump, and then panicking when January comes around. Start building in some of these small productivity strategies and watch your productivity transform. Finish the year strong in an organised manner!

But don’t forget, you know yourself best, and some of these things might not work for you! Find what works best for you and stick with it.

Sending all of the productive magic your way for a satisfying end of 2023.
